Updated: Feb 17
The U.S. embassy in China said on Saturday that a 60-year-old American man has died from the coronavirus infection. It is the first known American death from the virus, which was declared an emergency by the World Health Organization.
The coronavirus has reportedly claimed the lives of over 700 to date.
Hundreds of Americans and their families were evacuated from Wuhan and are being kept in quarantine at U.S. military bases. The American who died was not among those who were evacuated.
According to the Center for Disease Control, there have been 12 confirmed positive tests of people in the United States for the virus. Results for another hundred are pending, and 225 others who were exposed to the virus tested negative for the illness.
The CDC perceives the immediate risk to the American public as low at this time.
